While Kalaupapa is now a National Historic Site, it is also the home of the few former patients who choose to remain there. So access, is by law is STRICTLY regulated.
Unless you are invited by one of the residents, you must take the tour offered by Damien Tours of Kalaupapa (about $60 ). The peninsula can be reached by Air, or by way of the trail descending the 1,600-foot-high (488m) cliffs. Visitors can Hike in and out at no cost or ride one of the Molokai mules, which will add about $125 to the cost. Visitors must be at least 16 years old.
Always check if trail is open before heading down. During strong rain storms a muddy trail and landslides can occur resulting in closure until repairs are done. —Alert : as of 12/31/19 the trail is closed due to landslide.
Today, the serene Kalaupapa National Historical Park is a place of preservation and education and is accessible as described. Kalaupapa cannot be reached by car.
