• Hawaii may from time to time have vog instead of smog. Vog is a hazy air pollution caused by the volcanic emissions from Kīlauea volcano. The vog occasionally blows to other islands. It is not dangerous, although heavy vog can be uncomfortable for people with asthma or respiratory issues.

• It’s the only U.S. state that grows coffee commercially.

• The island does NOT have any native snake species and it is illegal to own one as a pet.
